_________________________ George Peabody Library | Baltimore, Maryland | 1866 • • The George Peabody Library, formerly known as the Library of the Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore, is the 19th-century research library of The Johns Hopkins University • • Located on the Peabody campus in the Mount Vernon-Belvedere historic cultural neighborhood, the library’s collections are available for use by the general public, in keeping with the famous Baltimorean George Peabody's goal to create a library "for the free use of all persons who desire to consult it." • • The Peabody Institute Library was funded by George Peabody - having become a wealthy man in Baltimore through commerce during the early 1800s, "gave $300,000 as a beginning sum for the Peabody Institute" in February 1857 • • The Institute was originally planned to open in 1860, but border-state conflict in the region caused by the American Civil War delayed its establishing and construction until 1866 • • The institute was designed to be a cultural center for Baltimore, with plans for an art gallery, music school, a series of cash awards with gold medals known as "Peabody Prizes" for top graduates, as well as a public reference library which was later moved to the second segment in the East Wing in 1876-1878 • • In 1967, the library was transferred to the City of Baltimore and became part of the nearby Enoch Pratt Free Library - the City and State's free public library system, and oldest in America - which had been founded and endowed by George Peabody's friend Enoch Pratt • • The library interior is often regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. Completed in 1878, it was designed by Baltimore architect Edmund G. Lind in collaboration with the first Peabody provost, Nathaniel H. Morison, that described it as a "cathedral of books." • • Know more?

_________________________ Museu do Vinho | Pico Island, Portugal | 1999 • • Located on Pico Island in the Portuguese Azores, the Museu do Vinho or ‘Museum of Wine’ was established in 1999 and is an extension of the Pico Museum • • Located on the premises of the former Convent of the Order of Carlo, dating back to the 17th century, the building constitutes an architectural symbol of the golden phase of the “Vinho Verdelho” cycle on the island • • Wine production on the island dates back to the 15th century, and the forest of secular dragon trees that are part of the landscape date back even further - some an estimated 1000 years old • • The man-made landscape of stone walls (currais) laid out in grid formation running inland from, and parallel to, the rocky shore is uniquely organized in a pattern of vine plots to protect the Verdelho grapes from the harsh winds and seawater • • The lava landslides and the volcanic rocky soil dominate the landscape, so much so that in the tradition of the Portuguese poet, Raul Brandão, Pico is referred to as the Ilha Preta ("Black Island"), for its black volcanic earth • • The museum’s collection is comprised of ethnographic pieces, objects linked to the cycles of wine making. In 2004 the vineyard landscape was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site • • Know more?
